Sweet Separation 2017
21 May 2017 : Scratch Art Space, Marrickville, Sydney, Australia
Thinking of the walls of Jericho, The Great Wall of China, The Berlin Wall, and of the more recent follies of the Israeli-West Bank Barrier and Trump’s USA-Mexico Barrier, I constructed miniature walls working with my own weight in white sugar cubes. Working with sugar, an indispensable kitchen ingredient, but an insidious introduced poison for others. The intentional separation wall is another kind of poison, causing anguish, isolation, distress and hardship. In this performance the separation is “sweet” as the barrier has no impact. I used imported Turkish sugar cubes, which were both half the size and half the price of the local product !
